Set in 1980s Brisbane, the story follows Eli Bell, a young boy growing up in a complicated family surrounded by drugs, crime and difficult circumstances. Despite the darkness around him, Eli's story is also filled with love, humour, friendship and hope.

I loved how the characters felt incredibly human. They aren't perfect, and their lives aren't simple, but their relationships with one another are what really drive the story. There are moments that are funny, moments that are heartbreaking and plenty that make you stop and think.
