Wistaria Gardens, Parramatta
A little springtime escape in the heart of Parramatta. Tucked away within Parramatta Park, Wistaria Gardens feels likae one of those little hidden gems that makes you forget you’re only minutes from the city. With winding pathways, open lawns, historic garden features and beautiful flowers, it’s the perfect place for a slow wander, a picnic or, take few cute photos along the way.
🌸 The spring blooms
When the gardens burst into bloom, cascading purple flowers create the prettiest little springtime scene. There are also cherry blossoms and colourful seasonal displays throughout the gardens, making it a lovely place to wander around with. The wisteria typically reaches its peak for only a few weeks in mid-September, so timing your visit around the spring flowering season is definitely worth it.
🌿 A garden with a little history
Wistaria Gardens isn't just pretty, it has a story behind it.
The gardens date back to 1906 and originally formed part of the Cumberland Hospital precinct. They were created around Glengarriff House, which was built as the residence of the medical superintendent of the former Parramatta Lunatic Asylum. The gardens are considered one of Sydney's most intact surviving Edwardian gardens, with historic features including Japanese torii-style gates, classical urns and beautiful old plantings. The famous wisteria vines also have a pretty interesting history. The original cuttings were brought to Australia from Japan by Dr William Cotter Williamson, helping create the spectacular vines visitors can enjoy today.

I recently tried a beginner archery session at Sydney Olympic Park Archery Centre, and it was such a fun way to spend an afternoon.
🏹 Trying Archery for the First Time
I'll admit that archery isn't exactly something I had on my regular activity rotation. My usual combination is more along the lines of running, Pilates, walking and coffee — so picking up a bow was a little outside my comfort zone!
You don't need any previous archery experience. The beginner session is designed to teach you the basics before you start shooting at the targets yourself. You'll learn how to handle the equipment, aim and shoot safely, and then get plenty of opportunities to put those new skills into practice.

💕 Why You Should Try Archery in Sydney
One of my favourite things about trying new activities is getting out of the same old routine, and archery definitely delivered on that front. It's active without feeling like you're doing a traditional workout, and there's a real element of concentration involved. You have to slow down, focus on your target and pay attention to your technique. It's also a great social activity in Sydney. Grab a friend, bring your partner or get a group together for something a little more interesting than your usual coffee catch-up.
🎯 Is Archery Good for Beginners?
Absolutely! You don't need to be particularly sporty or have any previous experience with archery to give it a go. The beginner session provides an introduction to the basics, making it a great option if you've never picked up a bow before. I'd recommend going in with an open mind, listening to the instructions and not worrying too much about whether you're hitting the bullseye straight away. Although ... when you do hit it, prepare to feel proud of yourself.

The Archery Centre offers beginner sessions, casual archery, private coaching, school holiday programs and group activities.
Good to know: Arrive around 10–15 minutes before your session and make sure you wear enclosed shoes. Long hair should also be tied back.
Bookings are essential, so I'd recommend checking the website for current session times, availability and pricing before heading out.
🌷Floriade🌷: Canberra’s Spring Festival
There’s something about spring in Canberra that just feels a little bit more magical, especially when Commonwealth Park is covered in more than a million colourful blooms.
I recently headed along to Floriade Canberra for a little springtime adventure, and it was exactly the kind of day out I love — flowers, food, pretty photo spots, a Ferris wheel and, obviously, plenty of snacks.
Floriade 2026 is themed “Feast of Flowers”, celebrating the connection between nature, food and community. And honestly, after spending the day there, I can confirm there is plenty of both flowers and food to enjoy!
So, here’s a little peek into my Floriade day.
🌸 What is Floriade?
For anyone who hasn't been before, Floriade is Canberra's annual spring festival celebrating flowers, gardens, art, food and all things spring. Held at Commonwealth Park, the festival transforms the park into a giant colourful garden filled with tulips, seasonal flowers, garden displays, entertainment, food vendors and activities.
🌷 Wandering Through the Flowers
The best part of Floriade is simply wandering around and taking everything in. There are colourful flower beds everywhere you look, with different combinations of tulips and seasonal flowers creating little pockets of colour throughout the park. I definitely found myself stopping every few minutes to take another photo. Because apparently one flower photo is never enough.
There are also plenty of cute spots for photos, so if you're anything like me, you're going to want your phone fully charged before you arrive.
📸 Bring Your Camera
Floriade is basically a photographer's dream. Between the flowers, colourful displays and spring sunshine, there are endless opportunities for photos.I brought along my camera and, naturally, took approximately a million photos of flowers. Whether you're into photography, creating content or just want some pretty pictures for Instagram, it's an easy place to find something worth photographing.
🍜 The Food You Need to Try
Because walking around looking at flowers is hungry work. 😂
Chicken Pad Thai from Two Sisters Lao Thai Street Food: If you're looking for something savoury, the chicken Pad Thai from Two Sisters Lao Thai Street Food is a must-try. It was one of my food highlights from the day and the perfect option when you want something filling before heading back out to explore more of the festival.
Cinnamon Donuts from The Famous Berry Donut Van: The Famous Berry Donut Van is at Floriade this year, bringing its famous hot cinnamon donuts from Berry to Canberra. I also tried one of their thickshakes, and if you're a sweet-tooth person, I definitely recommend adding one to your order.
🎡 Take a Ride on the Ferris Wheel
You can't have a festival with a giant Ferris wheel and not consider going on it. The Giant Ferris Wheel costs $12 per person, or $60 for a full gondola. I thought it was a really fun addition to the day, especially because you get to see Floriade and the surrounding area from above. And, of course, it's another cute photo opportunity.

The Lark
The Lark is a clever and engaging 75-minute production featuring the Noni Hazlehurst. With no interval, the performance moves along at a great pace, keeping you completely immersed from beginning to end.
What I particularly enjoyed was the balance between humour and more thought-provoking moments.
Noni Hazlehurst was fantastic to watch, bringing plenty of warmth, personality and humour to the performance. Her presence on stage made the production incredibly engaging. It’s a great option if you're looking for a theatre experience that doesn't require an entire evening. It's entertaining, clever and leaves you with something to think about.

It’s one of Parramatta’s key performing arts venues, offering a diverse program of theatre, comedy, music, dance and other live performances. While its original theatre site is undergoing redevelopment, Riverside’s program is currently continuing at Riverside Live at PHIVE, located within Parramatta Square.

Lake Parramatta Reserve
🛶 Hire a Paddle Boat
Boat hire is operated by Parramatta Rowboats at the lake. Booking requirements and operating hours can change depending on weather, season and availability. An older listing specifically states that bookings were not required and visitors could arrive and choose an available boat.
🌳 Go for a Bushwalk
Lake Circuit – 4.2 km: approximately two hours according takes you through a mixture of bushland, creek crossings and scenic areas around the lake.
She-oak Track – 1.5 km return
Banksia Track – 2.4 km return
Arrunga Bardo Walk – 1.8 km
Walking tip: Wear comfortable shoes and be mindful that some creek crossings can become difficult or impassable after rain.
🏊 Go Swimming
Includes a gently sloping sandy beach and improved accessibility features. Swimming is only recommended within the designated swimming area when lifeguards are supervising. The City of Parramatta also advises checking water conditions before swimming and avoiding swimming after rain.
The swimming season is seasonal rather than year-round. For the upcoming 2026/27 season, the City of Parramatta states that lifeguards return from 24 October 2026, with weekend patrols from 11am–7pm initially and seven-day patrols from 5 December. Always check the official City of Parramatta website before swimming, as dates and conditions can change.

Lake Parramatta is a lovely spot for a picnic, especially if you're looking for a low-cost day out and includes:

🛝 Take the Kids to the Playground
If you're visiting with children, there's a playground within the reserve where little ones can burn off some energy.
🐕 Bring Your Dog
Lake Parramatta Reserve is also somewhere you can enjoy a walk with your dog. Dogs must remain on a lead and stay on established tracks. Cats are not permitted within the reserve because the area is protected as a wildlife refuge.
🎣 Fishing
Fishing is another activity permitted at Lake Parramatta, although there are some important rules to know. A NSW fishing licence is required, and the City of Parramatta advises that fish caught at Lake Parramatta should not be eaten because of water-quality issues.
🌿 Explore the Aboriginal Heritage
Lake Parramatta isn't just beautiful — the reserve also has important Aboriginal cultural significance. The traditional custodians of the area are peoples of the Burramattagal clan of the Dharug language group. Evidence of Aboriginal occupation remains throughout the reserve, including shelter caves, hand stencils, stone-flaking scars, tree scars and midden deposits.

Parramatta Park
A little slice of green in the heart of Parramatta.
Located right in the heart of the city, the park is a lovely spot for a walk, picnic, coffee stroll or a slow afternoon outdoors. With plenty of open green space, walking paths, picnic areas and places to explore.
The park is also home to Old Government House, and the park itself is recognised for its significant Aboriginal and European heritage. With 85 hectares of parkland, there is plenty to explore beyond simply going for a walk.
Parramatta Park regularly hosts events, community activities, guided tours, entertainment and seasonal experiences, so it's worth checking what's happening before you visit.

Auburn Botanical Gardens
The gardens cover a variety of different themed areas, including the Japanese Lake and Hill, Australian Garden, Australian Rainforest, Rose Garden, Scented Garden, Bonsai Garden, Aviary and Fauna Reserve.
Auburn Botanic Gardens has been part of the local landscape for decades. The gardens were designed following a vision from Eric Black, who was Auburn Municipal Council's Chief Engineer for many years, and officially opened to the public on 11 September 1977.

🌸 Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival
If you want to experience Auburn Botanic Gardens at its prettiest, plan your visit around the annual Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival. Held each August, the festival celebrates the beautiful cherry blossoms alongside Japanese culture, food, entertainment and family-friendly activities. In 2026, the festival ran from 22–30 August, with the gardens filled with around 200 cherry blossom trees in bloom. Visit the official Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival website for current updates.

Why I love going to musicals
For me, going to a musical isn't just about watching a story unfold. It's about the whole experience. Getting dressed up, heading into the city, grabbing a coffee or dinner beforehand, finding your seat and seeing the curtain rise — it all becomes part of the memory. And there’s something about hearing a song performed live that you’ve listened to hundreds of times that just hits differently. Sometimes you leave the theatre wanting to immediately listen to the soundtrack again. Other times you leave with a new favourite song, a new story to think about or simply a really good memory.
A little bit of music, a little bit of magic
There’s something special about going to the theatre to see a musical. From the moment the lights go down and the orchestra starts playing, you’re transported into another world — even if it’s only for a few hours. Whether you’re a lifelong musical lover or someone who has never been to a theatre production before, there’s a musical for everyone. Some will have you laughing, some will have you crying, and others will have you singing the soundtrack for days afterwards!

🎤 Jersey Boys
The story:
Jersey Boys tells the incredible story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons — from their beginnings in New Jersey to becoming one of the biggest musical groups of their time.
Packed with hit songs including Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man and Can't Take My Eyes Off You, this musical combines fantastic music with a fascinating story about friendship, success, family and the challenges that came with fame.

🎻 Fiddler on the Roof
The story:
Set in a small Jewish village in Imperial Russia, Fiddler on the Roof follows Tevye, a milkman trying to balance tradition, family and a changing world. With memorable songs such as Tradition, If I Were a Rich Man and Sunrise, Sunset, the musical is both funny and deeply moving. At its heart, it's a story about family, love, tradition and what happens when the world around you begins to change.
Why see it: It has a beautiful story, memorable music and plenty of heart.

🌈 Priscilla Queen of the Desert
The story:
Based on the Australian cult classic film, Priscilla Queen of the Desert follows two drag queens and a transgender woman who travel across the Australian outback in a fabulous pink bus. Along the way, they encounter colourful characters, unexpected challenges and plenty of opportunities to break into a classic dance-floor hit. With outrageous costumes, huge wigs and a soundtrack packed with iconic songs, Priscilla is anything but a quiet night at the theatre!
Why see it: The costumes, the music, the humour and the sheer fabulousness of it all.
Perfect for: Anyone who loves a big party atmosphere, classic hits and a musical that doesn't take itself too seriously.

You don't necessarily need the most expensive seats to have a great experience. Sometimes a slightly cheaper seat can still give you an excellent view.

Why not grab dinner or a drink before the show? A theatre night is always more fun when you turn it into an occasion.
🎵 Listen to the soundtrack first
This is completely optional, but listening to a few songs beforehand can make the experience even more exciting.

Once the curtain goes up, forget about your phone and enjoy the show!
My Favourite: Fiddler on the Roof
If I had to choose my favourite musical I’ve seen, it would have to be Fiddler on the Roof. There’s just something about this musical that completely draws you in. It’s lively, entertaining and full of energy, with music that is so contagious you’ll find yourself humming the songs long after the curtain comes down. But what really makes Fiddler on the Roof stand out for me is the storyline. It’s funny, heartwarming and emotional all at once, with a beautiful story about family, love, tradition and change. I loved how the characters and story came together, and there were plenty of moments that had me smiling, laughing and completely invested in what was happening on stage. If you’re looking for a musical that has fantastic music, plenty of energy and a storyline that will stay with you, Fiddler on the Roof is definitely one I'd recommend adding to your list.

Activities/shoppping recommendations
Hallyu! The Korean Wave
If you're a fan of K-pop, K-dramas, Korean fashion, beauty or films, Hallyu! The Korean Wave was an exhibition that was definitely worth checking out.
Held at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, the exhibition explored how South Korean popular culture went from a regional phenomenon to a worldwide cultural powerhouse. Developed by London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), it brought together more than 250 objects, costumes, film props, photographs and interactive experiences.
There was something for everyone, from PSY's iconic pink suit from Gangnam Style and costumes from Squid Game, to outfits worn by K-pop groups including ATEEZ and aespa. Fans of Parasite could also see a recreation of the film's famous bathroom set, while interactive experiences allowed visitors to try their hand at K-pop dancing.
What made the exhibition particularly interesting was that it went beyond simply celebrating K-pop. It explored the history of South Korea and how the country's social, political, technological and economic transformation helped create the conditions for the Korean Wave. It also looked at Korean fashion, beauty, cinema, television, technology and fandom.

Worth getting out for? Absolutely!
Whether you're already obsessed with Korean culture or simply curious about why K-pop, K-dramas and K-beauty have become such a huge part of global popular culture, Hallyu! The Korean Wave offered a colourful, interactive and fascinating look behind the phenomenon.
Tip: If you missed the exhibition in Canberra, keep an eye out for future opportunities to see the touring exhibition or explore other Korean cultural events around Canberra.
